Online tools like Turnitin and Google can be very helpful in determining the extent of copying of the work of others. Anyone accusing a student of plagiarizing written material is encouraged to use them.
It is important to realize that the Similarity Index is NOT a "plagiarism index" – there is no score that is inherently "good" or "bad". 0% does not necessarily mean that everything is OK with the student's paper and 75% does not necessarily mean that the student should flunk. You have to look at the report and decide: what is going on here?
An Originality Report might show a high similarity index for a number of reasons. Depending on the reason, you may or may not be able to ‘fix’ the problem. Click the description (below) that best describes your situation to learn how to solve your problem.
